about TRACY BRITT
My interest in dog training began while growing up with a German Shepard fear biter named Frasier. Like most families, our family knew nothing about the breed, we just loved their regal look. We hired a dog trainer and I was completely impressed and mesmerized about his knowledge of dogs. I quickly realized how much we didn’t know about what our dog needed to overcome negative behaviors, and how much our behaviors molded his.
The trainer took our dog, which appeared to be a very aggressive animal and within minutes, turned him into what looked like an obedient show dog. After that, I was hooked and absolutely fascinated by dog psychology and communication and couldn’t stop learning about it.
Fast forward, through college and the Academy, I became a Massachusetts State Trooper working on highway patrol and the mounted unit. After having my children, I decided to take a leave of absence from being a State Trooper because I was being pulled towards dog training.
At that time, I had my dog Nick, with whom I trained myself. People would see how well-behaved he was and they began asking me to train their dog. My hobby turned into a passion and career so much so that I retired from the Massachusetts State Police.
With that, in 2000, I decided to take it to the next level and apprenticed under Mike Pinksten from Olympia Kennels in Chester, New Hampshire, the premier Schutzhund teacher decoy in New England. Olympiakennels.com. The main focus during this training was household obedience and touched on the Schutzhund bite work.
After working with thousands of dogs to date, time and experience with so many different breeds, behaviors, and issues has proven to be my best teacher. There’s not one behavior that I haven’t worked with successfully. It is safe to say, that the single most important part of the training process is actually teaching the owners and family to follow-through with the training and structure that I recommend to them. Without consistent follow-through dogs, much like humans, will recoil quickly to bad behaviors.
